Our Story

My name is Kerry Smith, and I’m the owner of and photographer behind Boston Pet Portraits.

Boston Pet Portraits began in late 2022 when I decided to give my friend a portrait of her cat as a Christmas present. Realizing that I wouldn’t realistically be able to take a photo of him in the elaborate set I’d built while also keeping the portrait a surprise, I photographed him sitting in a window in his home with lighting that mimicked the studio lighting I’d created on my set earlier. Using the magic of Photoshop (and an understanding of lighting), I took a photo of him that looked almost exactly like this:

Then crossed it with this photo I’d taken of the set (with my own cat as a stand-in):

And created this:

Realizing all the doors this approach opened for creative pet photography, I got to work brainstorming other set ideas. Now animals that generally don’t do well leaving the home (cats, rabbits, older dogs, etc.) can have a beautiful portraits created of them for their families to cherish for years to come.

Not wanting to be limited to in-home or studio portrait sessions, we also offer outdoor sessions for more adventurous animals (primarily dogs, but if you’ve got a horse or an adventure cat, please (!) send us an email); whether it’s a session in a park or a more involved hike, we’ve got you covered.

Please check back soon as there’s lots more on the way!
